How to choose a showcase for a ship model if you don’t want to redo it later

When a model ship is finished, a very logical question comes up: where and how should you store it?
At first, it seems simple — just place it on a shelf and that’s it. But after some time, small issues begin to appear: dust, accidental touches, something slightly bent here and there.

And suddenly the model no longer looks the way it did right after assembly.

I often see situations where people only start thinking about a display case after they’ve already run into these problems. Although ideally, it should be planned in advance.

Why a display case is not an “extra”, but a necessity

A model ship is a complex piece. It has many small details: rigging, masts, decorative elements. And all of this collects dust very well.

The worst part is that this dust is hard to remove completely. You can gently clean it with a brush, but it will never look perfectly clean again.

There’s also the risk of accidents. One careless movement is enough to damage a fragile part. Especially if the model is placed somewhere people or children can reach it.

A display case solves both problems:

  • protects from dust
  • removes the risk of accidental damage

And as a bonus — the model starts to look like a display piece, not just something sitting on a shelf.

The biggest mistake — wrong size

This is the most common issue.

The usual logic is: “I’ll make the case exactly the same size as the model.”
In practice, this almost always leads to problems.

First, it becomes difficult to place the model аккуратно.
Second, it looks cramped.
Third, the risk of damaging something during placement increases.

It’s much better to leave some extra space:

  • a few centimeters on the sides
  • a bit more on the height

When there’s space around the model, it looks cleaner and more “premium”.

What to choose: glass or plastic

It’s fairly simple, but there are some nuances.

Plastic:

  • lighter
  • cheaper
  • easier to work with

But over time it can:

  • become cloudy
  • get scratched
  • lose its appearance

Glass:

  • looks cleaner
  • stays clear longer
  • is more resistant to small damage

If the model is valuable to you, it’s better to choose glass from the start and not worry about it later.

The base — a small detail that matters

It might seem like the base isn’t that important. The display case itself feels like the main thing.

But in reality, the base defines the overall look.

Wood or MDF look clean and neutral. They don’t distract from the model, but instead highlight it.

Plastic bases often make the whole display look cheaper, even if the case itself is fine.

Ready-made or custom

If the model is small and standard, you can try to find a ready-made display case.

But with model ships, this rarely works perfectly.
They often have:

  • non-standard length
  • tall structures
  • protruding elements

As a result, you either accept the inconvenience or end up redoing it.

That’s why in many cases it’s easier to make a display case for a specific model. It saves time and frustration.

Conclusion

A display case is not just “protection from dust”. It’s a way to preserve the model in the condition you created it.

If you approach the choice properly, it will last for years without any need for changes.

If you try to save money or guess the dimensions, you’ll almost always have to fix something later.

👉 If you don’t want to guess sizes and materials, it’s easier to calculate a display case for your model from the start — it will save you from unnecessary rework.
